Microsoft announced today that it will lower its Microsoft Store fees for PC game developers well below the industry-standard 30 percent rate.

“As part of our commitment to empower every PC game creator to achieve more, starting on August 1 the developer share of Microsoft Store PC games sales net revenue will increase to 88 percent, from 70 percent,” Microsoft’s Matt Booty announced. “A clear, no-strings-attached revenue share means developers can bring more games to more players and find greater commercial success from doing so.”

A separate Microsoft post on LinkedIn expands a bit on the value proposition of PC gaming.

“Some of the biggest and most influential games in the world are PC-first games,” Microsoft’s Sarah Bond writes. “With all the effort developers put in to [sic] making great games, we are motivated to help them find more players who love them. Our [email protected] self-publishing program helps enable PC game developers publish their games on the Microsoft Store. We also help accelerate discoverability through Xbox Game Pass for PC which gives developers the opportunity to be part of a curated library of high-quality PC games on Windows 10.”

All of these initiatives, Bond says, help developers reach more gamers on Windows.
