At its Xbox & Bethesda event today, Microsoft provided an update on Halo Infinite and showed off the multiplayer experience for the first time.

“We’ve been focusing hard on the elements that make Halo uniquely fun, while polishing and optimizing the game in preparation for launch on Xbox and PC,” Microsoft’s Joseph Staten writes. “We’re not done yet, but we’re getting close. We can’t wait for you to finally play for yourselves.”

The goal for Halo Infinite multiplayer, Microsoft says, is to “honor classic Halo combat while also offering new players the support needed to jump in and have a great time.” The game will feature a Spartan Academy and Spartan Commander Laurette, who will help players familiarize themselves with the maps, weapons, and equipment offered by the game. There will also be bot matches for new players.

As for the campaign, it will continue the story of the Master Chief and Cortana from Halo 5.

“Cortana’s fate is one of the Infinite campaign’s big mysteries, and early in the story, you will meet a new UNSC AI, ‘the Weapon’ that was created to help stop Cortana,” Staten says. “Together with the Pilot, the Master Chief and the Weapon begin an epic adventure to explore Zeta Halo, defeat the Banished forces who control the ring, and unravel even more mysteries along the way.”

And for the first time, Microsoft is also discussing the content that it will deliver for Halo Infinite after it’s released this fall. And it says it has already started work on the “first year of content” that it will deliver after the initial release.
