Spotify confirmed this weekend that it is retiring the Car View feature of its mobile app, which made it easier to use while driving.
“We can confirm that we’re retiring the car view feature,” a Spotify moderator wrote in a response to a question in the firm’s forums. “This however doesn’t mean we don’t want to improve on how our users listen to Spotify while driving. On the contrary, we’re actively exploring a variety of new ways to deliver the best in-car listening experience. Think of retiring car-view as something that needs to happen in an effort to make way for new innovations coming down the track.”
I would think, instead, that Spotify would have that eventual replacement available before it replaced Car View, but whatever. That same representative suggested that users might “listen hands-free via Google Assistant” while they wait for Spotify to come up with something else. I’m guessing this person used to work at Microsoft and came up with the “hard computer science problem” quote when someone complained about Surface Books hot-bagging in late 2015. That idiotic response was the first shot fired in a little incident called Surfacegate.
It’s also possible that Spotify already has its replacement in place: The firm just released an $80 car-add for Spotify called, yes, really, Car Thing. You can’t make this stuff up.
