Microsoft’s Xbox Series X and Series S consoles have beat a new sales record in the US according to The NPD Group. March 2022 was a new record month for Xbox hardware unit and dollar sales, beating previous records in March 2011 for the most total units sold, and a March 2014 record for the biggest revenue.
If this is an impressive performance for Xbox in terms of revenue considering the ongoing chip shortages, the Nintendo Switch is continuing to sell more units. “Xbox Series was the best-selling hardware platform of both March 2022 and the first quarter in dollars, while Switch led both time periods in unit sales,” highlighted NPD analyst Mat Piscatella.
US NPD HW – Xbox hardware unit and dollar sales in March 2022 set new all-time March highs for the platform. Previous Xbox bests were set in March 2011 (units) and March 2014 (dollars).

If Microsoft stopped sharing data about console sales during the Xbox One/PS4 era, the company’s bet to launch an affordable Xbox Series S in addition to the flagship Series X is certainly paying off. While both the PS5 and the Xbox Series X remain pretty hard to find, the Xbox Series S is easier to manufacture and costs just $299, making it the most affordable current-gen console.
According to The NPD Group, chip shortages are still impacting the video games industry pretty hard this year. Video game hardware dollar sales in the US dropped to $1.2 billion in Q1 2022, a number down 15% compared to the same period last year. “Continued console hardware supply challenges combined with a return to experiential spending are likely drivers of the Q1 declines,” explained Piscatella.
